Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to compile a list of flood control projects undertaken since he assumed office in 2022.
According to Philippines News Agency, the directive came during Marcos' fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) at the House of Representatives. The President expressed concerns after inspecting areas affected by recent weather disturbances, noting that several projects were substandard or had collapsed.
Marcos highlighted the issues observed during his inspection of the aftermath of typhoon Crising, Dante, Emong, and the southwest monsoon. He criticized the quality of some flood control projects and called for transparency, urging an end to corrupt practices including kickbacks and conspiracy to misuse public funds.
To address these issues, the President ordered an audit and performance review of all flood control infrastructure. He tasked the DPWH with providing a detailed list of projects initiated or completed in the last three years, which will be scrutinized by the regional project monitoring committee. The findings, including any failed, incomplete, or 'ghost' projects, will be made public for citizen review.
Marcos emphasized the importance of public involvement in reviewing the published list, inviting citizens to share insights that could aid the investigation. He assured that those found guilty, including contractors, would face charges to ensure accountability for the corruption and damage caused.
In addition to the audit, the President announced the commencement of the Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge project this year. The 32-kilometer bridge, expected to significantly reduce travel time between Mariveles, Bataan, and Naic, Cavite, is part of ongoing infrastructure development. Marcos also prioritized the rehabilitation of the Guadalupe Bridge in Makati City, underscoring the administration's commitment to infrastructure improvements.
