New delhi: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reassured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in India that their welfare is central to every foreign mission undertaken by the Philippine government. Meeting with the Filipino community abroad remains a top priority, as stated during his visit to India, invited by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos began his five-day visit by engaging with the Filipino community at the Taj Mahal Hotel in New Delhi. He praised the Filipino community in India for their unity, professionalism, and generosity, highlighting their role as ambassadors of goodwill for the Philippines. The President emphasized that interacting with the Filipino community is a significant part of his agenda during foreign visits.
President Marcos acknowledged the contributions of Filipinos in India, noting their upholding of the country's image with dignity and talent. The community mainly consists of Filipino women married to Indian nationals and professionals in various industries. While India does not currently have a Migrant Workers Office, he assured the community that their needs are being addressed through the Philippine Embassy and honorary consulates in Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
He announced that a Social Security Agreement between the Philippines and India would be signed, offering additional protection and benefits to Filipinos residing and working in the country. The President also reiterated ongoing efforts to enhance support for OFWs, including easing the travel experience through the airport OFW Lounge, which has served approximately 1.2 million people.
President Marcos highlighted the continuous upgrades to the country's international and regional airports, as well as the strengthening of reintegration support and programs for OFWs. He mentioned that the introduction of e-visas has simplified the visa process, and the visa-free entry scheme for Indian tourists, initiated last June, will be complemented by the resumption of direct flights led by Air India.
The President expressed optimism about strengthening relations with India, now the fourth-largest economy globally. In the coming days, his delegation will engage with India's government and major enterprises, aiming to attract investments and generate more jobs in the Philippines.
Halfway through his term, Marcos remains focused on driving economic growth, citing the Philippines' 5.4 percent GDP record in the first quarter of 2025. He extended gratitude to the Filipino community, emphasizing that their support is ultimately for the country and its Republic.
