Malaca±ang: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. awarded the Order of Sikatuna with the rank of Datu (Grand Cross), Silver Distinction, to outgoing French Ambassador Marie Fontanel. The award was given during her farewell call for her significant contributions in enhancing the bilateral relations between the Philippines and France.
According to Philippines News Agency, Ambassador Fontanel played a pivotal role in advancing defense and maritime security cooperation between the two countries. Her efforts were instrumental in the signing of the Philippines-France Status of Visiting Forces Agreement, slated for completion in March 2026. The agreement marked a milestone in defense cooperation and underscored France's support for a rules-based international order in the Indo-Pacific region.
Fontanel also focused on promoting political and economic engagements, facilitating cooperation in infrastructure, transportation, energy, and sustainable financing between Manila and Paris. Her initiatives extended to cultural and educational programs that strengthened people-to-people ties.
In recent years, the defense relationship between the Philippines and France has expanded as both nations aim to enhance maritime security and uphold a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region.
