Manila: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday emphasized the need for a more effective and responsive governance, as he reflected on the stories and prayers of Jesus Nazareno devotees. In his message for the Feast of the Black Nazarene, Marcos drew inspiration from the deep expressions of sacrifice, perseverance, and solidarity embodied in the annual devotion.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marcos said such Filipino values 'keep many families standing and communities moving to protect their dignity and secure their future.' He highlighted how the procession of the Nazareno symbolizes the Filipino faith's resilience, as it endures physical challenges and represents the daily struggles of the people striving for a more certain tomorrow.
Marcos pointed out the gap between the burdens people carry and the support they receive, urging for wiser governance and more responsive services to bridge this distance. He encouraged Filipinos to extend the values of compassion, service, and shared responsibility beyond the procession and into everyday life, promoting unity and fairer access to opportunities.
Marcos also declared January 9, 2026, a special non-working day in Manila to ensure the orderly observance of the Feast of Jesus Nazarene, as millions of devotees are expected to gather at the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo.
Meanwhile, Balanga Bishop Rufino Sescon addressed corruption issues, calling for public officials linked to such allegations to step down. During his homily at the Misa Mayor or midnight Mass, Sescon criticized those who remain in office despite being implicated in anomalies, especially concerning flood control projects.
Sescon urged officials to heed the theme of Nazareno 2026, emphasizing that stepping down can demonstrate care for others and not just oneself. He stated that stepping down is not necessarily a source of shame but an act of repentance and true unity, inspired by Christ's example.
The bishop encouraged voluntary resignation from those implicated, hoping it would reflect their repentance and genuine concern for the community in the spirit of true unity and solidarity.
