Manila: The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) sustained its rally Friday but the peso slightly weakened against the US dollar. The local bourse's main index rose 0.43 percent to 6,348.14 points, but the broader All Shares ended almost unchanged at 0.02 percent to 3,607.00 points. Most of the sectoral indices also rose during the day, namely Services, 1.03 percent; Mining and Oil, 0.70 percent; Financials, 0.66 percent; and Holding Firms, 0.40 percent. On the other hand, Property shed 0.55 percent and Industrial, 0.17 percent. Volume reached 1.57 billion shares amounting to PHP6.11 billion. Decliners led advancers at 114 to 92, while 64 shares were unchanged.
According to Philippines News Agency, "The local market rose further as investors continued to buy shares with hopes still pinned on the possibility of another rate cut by the BSP (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas)," Philstocks Financials Inc. said in a market report. "Hopes that the US Supreme Court will go against President Donald Trump's tariff policies in their potential ruling also helped in today's session."
On the other hand, the local currency ended the week's trading at 59.24 to a greenback after improving to 59.17 a day ago, which Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) chief economist Michael Ricafort traced partly to a jump in global oil prices, stronger US dollar and anticipation for a positive decision by the US Supreme Court. The peso opened the day stronger at 59.2 from Thursday's 59.3 start, and even reached 59.07 mid-trade. Weakest level for the day stood at 59.28, bringing the average to 59.16. Volume went down to USD1.23 billion from the previous session's USD1.65 billion.
