PBBM Pledges Ongoing Support for PUV Service Contracting Amid Rising Oil Prices

Quezon city: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. inspected the Department of Transportation's Service Contracting Program (SCP) at the Araneta Center Terminal in Cubao, emphasizing the government's commitment to alleviate the impact of escalating global oil prices on transport workers and commuters.

According to Philippines News Agency, the SCP is led by the Department of Transportation and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. The program offers financial aid to public utility vehicle operators who comply with authorized routes, deploy units effectively, and provide fare discounts to passengers. The initiative targets jeepneys, UV Express units, and buses, aiming to maintain continuous operations and reduce the financial burden on commuters through decreased fares and enhanced service.

President Marcos highlighted that the initiative is designed to support both transport operators and the riding public amidst rising fuel prices due to the conflict in the Middle East. He assured that the government would continue its support as long as fuel prices remain elevated.

The program is expected to involve approximately 20,000 traditional and modern jeepneys, buses, and UV Express vehicles. Drivers and operators will receive financial aid ranging from PHP30 to PHP100 per kilometer from the government, in addition to income from fares. Furthermore, a 20 percent fare discount will be available for regular passengers, while senior citizens, students, and persons with disabilities will benefit from a 40 percent discount.

President Marcos also addressed the potential impact of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, stating that the government remains vigilant, particularly in supporting overseas Filipino workers. He affirmed the government's commitment to assisting with repatriation and providing livelihood support to returning Filipinos. The President acknowledged the volatility of global oil prices due to the evolving situation in the region and noted that the government is exploring additional measures to mitigate its effects on Filipinos.
