PCO Chief Gomez Vows to Promote Transparency, Protect Press Freedom

Manila: Newly-installed Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Dave Gomez on Friday pledged to promote transparency in government and protect press freedom under his leadership. Gomez made the vow, as he met with reporters after taking his oath as the new PCO chief before Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gomez expressed his gratitude and dedication to the role, emphasizing that he is honored to be appointed as the head of the PCO. He conveyed his appreciation to the President for the trust placed in him and promised to fulfill his responsibilities with complete commitment and focus. Gomez highlighted the importance of a well-informed public for a healthy democracy, stressing the need for government transparency, safeguarding press freedom, and defending citizens' right to free speech. He asserted that access to information is fundamental to accountability and public trust.

As the PCO secretary, Gomez introduced his approach of '3Ps Minus One'-Programs, Policies minus Politics. He clarified that his role would focus on communicating and promoting the government's programs and policies without engaging in political discourse. Gomez emphasized that his mandate does not cover politics, reaffirming his objective to concentrate solely on government initiatives.

Gomez also extended his gratitude to his predecessor, Jay Ruiz, for the warm welcome. Ruiz, who will now serve as a board member of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office, accompanied Gomez during his first meeting with Palace reporters. Gomez's appointment as the PCO secretary was announced by Malaca±ang a day before he took the oath. He is the fifth individual to lead the PCO, succeeding Ruiz.

Before assuming his new role, Gomez served as communications director at PMFTC Inc., Philip Morris International's Philippine affiliate, for over two decades. His career began as a reporter for The Philippine Star, and he also held the position of director-general at the Philippine Information Agency.
