PH Archdioceses Mourn Pope Francis’ Passing

Manila: Archdioceses throughout the Philippines have expressed their sympathies for the death of Pope Francis, who died Monday morning in the Vatican.

According to Philippines News Agency, in separate statements, the Archdioceses of Cebu, Lingayen-Dagupan in Pangasinan, and Palo, Leyte said they are one with the "Universal Church" in mourning the demise of the 88-year-old Holy Father. "The Archdiocese of Cebu joins the Universal Church in mourning the death of Pope Francis," they stated. They invited all the lay faithful, clergy, and religious to offer prayers and Masses for the eternal repose of his soul, hoping the Lord grants him the reward of his faithful service.

Archbishop Socrates Villegas noted that the pontiff has returned to the "House of the Father." He expressed both grief and hope, emphasizing the profound impact Pope Francis had on the faithful. Villegas remembered Pope Francis as a gift to the Church, serving with humility and compassion. He recounted the Pope's visit to the Philippines in 2015, noting the deep connection and love felt by the people during the visit, even amidst challenging weather conditions.

The Leyte archdiocese expressed gratitude for Pope Francis' visit after Super Typhoon Yolanda, highlighting his dedication and compassion during the trying times. They urged the faithful to pray for his eternal rest and to hold on to his comforting words during his visit.

Meanwhile, Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos offered prayers and Holy Masses for Pope Francis. He encouraged the faithful to embrace the teachings and examples set by the Holy Father, emphasizing the hope and healing Pope Francis brought to the world.

The Vatican News announced that Pope Francis passed away peacefully on Monday, April 21, 2025, at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City. His papacy began on March 13, 2013, marking the first time a Jesuit and a Latin American served as pope.
