PH Army Set to Acquire Short-Range Air Defense Missile Systems

Manila: The Philippine Army (PA) is poised to enhance its defensive capabilities with the acquisition of short-range air defense missile systems. PA commander, Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, confirmed that the appropriations for this project are already in place, as outlined in last year's budget.

According to Philippines News Agency, the initiative is currently in operation, with mechanisms for acquisition underway. This procurement is distinct from the Philippine Navy's efforts to obtain similar systems to safeguard its BrahMos cruise missile platforms. The short-range air defense systems are crucial for defending PA installations and sensitive equipment from aerial threats.

Galido emphasized that investing in these missile systems is part of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' strategy to bolster its territorial defense capabilities. While specifics on the type of missiles remain undisclosed, Galido highlighted the Army's ongoing efforts to identify platforms that ensure force projection within the country's exclusive economic zone, in coordination with the Navy and Air Force's development plans.

The PA chief noted, "As to the brand, we haven't identified a specific brand, but we go for the platform and its capability." This acquisition marks a significant step in the PA's capability build-up to secure the nation's sovereignty.
