PH Ocean Economy Surpasses PHP1-Trillion Gross Value Mark Again in 2025

Manila: The Philippine ocean-based industries have once again reached a significant milestone by surpassing the PHP1 trillion gross value mark last year, contributing nearly 4 percent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP), as reported by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

According to Philippines News Agency, data released on Thursday indicated a 5.3 percent increase in the nation's ocean economy, reaching PHP1.08 trillion in 2025 from PHP1.02 trillion in 2024. The gross value added by ocean-based activities was 3.8 percent of the GDP at current prices in 2025.

Industries that experienced the most considerable growth include marine safety, surveillance and resource management at 31.7 percent, marine insurance at 29.6 percent, and transportation and storage at 10.8 percent. Ocean fishing had the highest share within the ocean economy at 24.1 percent, followed by the manufacture of ocean-based products at 21.3 percent, sea-based transportation and storage at 16.3 percent, and coastal accommodation and food and beverage services activities at 12.1 percent.

PSA data also highlighted a 3.4 percent rise in employment within ocean-based industries, with 2.46 million individuals employed last year compared to 2.38 million in 2024. This sector accounted for 5 percent of the country's total employment in 2025. Ocean fishing led in employment contribution, accounting for 37.8 percent of total ocean-based employment, followed by sea-based transportation and storage, and coastal accommodation and food and beverage services activities.
