Warsaw: World Soft Tennis Championships veterans Bien Zoleta and Joseph Arcilla are spearheading the 15-member Philippine team competing in the Poland Cup from July 4 to 9. The team aims to sharpen their skills ahead of the Asian Championships in Mungyeong, South Korea, scheduled from September 13 to 23.
According to Philippines News Agency, the lineup also includes players Princess Catindig, Christy Sa±osa, Bea Ebriega, Shyryn Salazar, rookie Airies Nuguit, Patrick Mendoza, Adjuthor Moralde II, Sherwin Nuguit, and Jason Caminting. The delegation is further strengthened by head coach Michael Enriquez and assistant coaches Josephine Paguyo, Wenifredo De Leon, and Mark Anthony Alcoseba.
The Poland Cup serves as crucial preparation for the upcoming Asian Championships. Bien Zoleta expressed the team's ambition to reach the podium again, recalling his past success in winning singles and team bronze medals at the 2016 Asian Championships in Chiba, Japan. Zoleta, alongside Catindig and Arcilla, is eager to showcase their talents in the Poland Cup, marking their first international tournament of the year.
The Philippines recently topped the medal tally board at the 2023 Cambodia Southeast Asian Games, securing three gold medals. Arcilla triumphed in men's singles, while Zoleta and Catindig excelled in women's doubles. The women's team, comprising Zoleta, her sister Bambi, Catindig, Sa±osa, Fatima Ayesha Amirul, and Virvienica Isearis Bejosano, also clinched gold.
Bien Zoleta's accomplishments include winning mixed and team bronze medals at the 2011 Southeast Asian Games in Palembang, Indonesia. Notably, Zoleta became the third Filipino to win a bronze medal at the World Soft Tennis Championships (2015, India), following Paguyo (1995, Japan) and Arcilla (2011, Korea).
