Pasig city: The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has extended an invitation to Timor-Leste to participate in next year's Tour of Luzon and the inaugural Mindanao Youth Games in Lanao del Norte. This development marks a significant step towards fostering regional sports collaboration.
According to Philippines News Agency, PSC Chair John Patrick Gregorio extended the invitation during a recent meeting with Timor-Leste Ambassador to the Philippines, Marciano Octavio Garcia Da Silva, at the Philsports Complex in Pasig City. The Mindanao Youth Games, scheduled to take place in Tubod from March 17 to 21, 2027, will feature ten sports for athletes aged 8 to 18. Gregorio emphasized the importance of the event, stating, "This is more than just competition. It is about building bridges, discovering talent, and using sports as a platform for peace and development." He further expressed that Timor-Leste's participation would enrich the Games and strengthen the ties between the two ASEAN neighbors.
The multi-stage Tour of Luzon, established in 1955, shares similarities with the Tour de Timor, an international mountain bike race initiated in 2009. Ambassador Da Silva highlighted the universal nature of sports, saying, "By joining these events, Timor-Leste and the Philippines are not only competing but also sharing culture, friendship, and mutual respect."
Beyond these competitions, the PSC is actively exploring collaboration programs with Timor-Leste in arnis, the Philippines' national martial art, and football, Timor-Leste's most popular sport. Proposed initiatives include coaching exchanges, technical training, and grassroots development programs. Gregorio explained, "Arnis represents our heritage, while football is deeply rooted in Timorese culture. By sharing expertise, we can learn from each other and elevate both sports across our nations."
The PSC is also working with the Department of Foreign Affairs to pursue a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Sports Cooperation between the Philippines and Timor-Leste. This proposed MOU would encompass community-based sports programs, healthy lifestyles, grassroots management, governance, and athlete development. Gregorio noted, "This agreement will institutionalize our cooperation. It will ensure continuity, sustainability, and shared growth in sports development."
The meeting underscored sports tourism as a catalyst for cultural exchange and economic growth. Both parties agreed that hosting events and exchanging best practices can stimulate local economies while enhancing people-to-people connections. Timor-Leste became ASEAN's 11th full member on October 26, 2025. As Da Silva stated, "As we prepare for our ASEAN Chairmanship in 2029, partnerships like this with the Philippines will help us showcase our identity and strengthen our role in the region."
