Manila: The Philippines is gearing up to take a pivotal role in shaping the future of tourism in Southeast Asia as it prepares to host the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) events, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT).
According to Philippines News Agency, the DOT has expressed optimism for the coming year, despite the challenges faced by the tourism industry in 2025. The Philippines is set to host significant events such as the United Nations Tourism Global Forum on Gastronomy and the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2026 in Cebu. This hosting duty underscores the country's commitment to leading and navigating the future of regional tourism.
The DOT is organizing the 2026 ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in Cebu, which will take place from January 26 to 29, alongside a ministerial meeting involving ASEAN Tourism Ministers. A major focus of the event will be the ASEAN Tourism Strategic Action Plan, with the Philippines acting as the country coordinator.
The DOT has stated that it will continue efforts to enhance collaboration and promotion to boost the tourism sector, a crucial component of the Philippine economy. While the recovery of inbound arrivals has been slow, impacted by visa disruptions, natural calamities, security perceptions, and limited air connectivity, the department remains steadfast in its efforts to overcome these challenges.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco highlighted the resilience of the tourism sector, emphasizing that it has been a beacon of hope in difficult times. Despite natural calamities disrupting communities and livelihoods, tourism has played a crucial role in restoring work, sustaining families, and supporting communities.
The DOT has made strides in strengthening tourism infrastructure, establishing Tourist Rest Areas nationwide, expanding digital and on-ground services through Travel Philippines and the Tourist Call Center, and launching transit tours and a medical concierge at Ninoy Aquino International Airport to improve accessibility and traveler experience.
The agency has also focused on elevating hospitality standards through the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence, equipping the workforce with skills and values that reflect Filipino culture. At the grassroots level, initiatives like the Tourism Champions Challenge have empowered local government units to invest in their tourism projects.
Tourism Secretary Frasco acknowledged the contributions of the people, stating that tourism advanced due to the perseverance of workers, the steadfastness of partners, and the welcoming spirit of communities, even in uncertain times.
