Philippines Urges Israel and Iran to Deescalate Amid Rising Tensions in Middle East

Manila: The Philippine government, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), has expressed 'grave concern' over the escalating tensions in the Middle East following Israel's unprecedented direct attack on Iran. In a significant development, Israel launched sweeping air strikes on Friday, targeting nuclear sites and resulting in the death of top Iranian military officials. The attack, described by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a campaign that could last 'many days,' has drawn international attention and concern.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DFA has emphasized the importance of deescalation and peaceful resolution in the region. Ma. Teresita Daza, the Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, stated, "With the welfare of the people of the Middle East and the Filipinos there in mind, the Philippines urges concerned countries to deescalate and follow the path of peace." The Philippine Embassies in the region have been put on alert and are prepared to assist Filipinos in their respective jurisdictions. Daza confirmed that, so far, there have been no reports of any Filipinos being harmed or affected by the operations.

In response to the attack, the Philippine Embassies in Iran, Israel, and Iraq have issued new advisories urging Filipinos to avoid public areas and remain vigilant. Based on the latest data from the DFA, there are 30,742 Filipinos in Israel, 1,598 in Iraq, and at least 1,180 in Iran, with many being married to Iranian nationals. The situation remains tense as Israel has declared a state of emergency, anticipating potential retaliation from Iran.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has vowed to impose 'harsh punishment' on Israel for the attack, claiming that Israel has 'sealed for itself a bitter and painful destiny.' Prior to the strikes, Iran had warned of targeting United States military bases within its reach if a conflict were to arise. The United States, which maintains a military presence across the Middle East, including a base in Iraq, has distanced itself from Israel's actions and cautioned Iran against targeting US interests or personnel. Notably, the US was scheduled to engage in another round of nuclear talks with Iran in Oman on June 15.
