Phivolcs: No Imminent Threat in Mayon Volcano

Mayon volcano: Mayon Volcano is not expected to erupt soon due to low volcanic activity, the head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) assured on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, monitoring parameters indicate low level activity, thus the volcano is still under Alert Level 1, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said during the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon interview.

There was no volcanic earthquake recorded in the last 24 hours, and gas emission of 307 tonnes was also low.

"The volcano will not erupt in the next few days because it is still under Alert Level 1," he said in Filipino.

Although Phivolcs recorded six rockfall events and a weak crater glow that could only be seen through a telescope, Bacolcol clarified that Mayon Volcano's alert level will only be raised if there is a clear and sustained escalation in volcanic activities.

However, Bacolcol reminded the public that entry into the permanent danger zone or 6-kilometer radius from the summit of the volcano should still be strictly prohibited.

The people are also urged to heed advisories from Phivolcs and the local government units.
