PNP Activates Emergency Response After Magnitude 7.4 Quake in Davao

Davao: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has immediately activated its emergency response units after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Davao Oriental on Friday. Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the decision was in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to ensure that the government is assessing the situation on the ground and ensuring public safety.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez stated that PNP units in Davao Oriental and nearby provinces were quickly mobilized to assist affected communities, maintain public safety, and coordinate with local authorities. He added that police personnel are currently inspecting buildings, roads, and other infrastructures for damage and identifying areas that need urgent attention.

'The PNP is working closely with the Provincial and City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices (PDRRMO/CDRRMO) to support disaster response and provide assistance to those in need. The public is advised to stay calm, follow safety guidelines, and avoid damaged structures while keeping updated through official announcements,' Nartatez said in a statement. He emphasized that the PNP remains fully committed to assisting affected communities and ensuring the safety and security of all residents during this critical period.

In a statement, President Marcos said he has directed the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, Office of Civil Defense, Armed Forces, Philippine Coast Guard, and all concerned agencies to immediately carry out evacuations in coastal areas, activate emergency communication lines, and coordinate closely with local governments. 'Search, rescue, and relief operations are already being prepared and will be deployed as soon as it is safe to do so. The Department of Social Welfare and Development is pre-positioning food and non-food items, while the Department of Health is ready to provide emergency medical assistance,' Marcos said. The President also urged residents in affected regions to stay vigilant and 'stay away from the shore until authorities declare it safe.'

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported that the tectonic quake struck 44 kilometers northeast of Manay town at 9:43 a.m. It was 20 km deep.
