PNP Chief Supports Service Extension for Retiring Calabarzon Top Cop

Manila: Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. expressed his support on Monday for a one-year service extension for Calabarzon police chief Brig. Gen. Hansel Marantan, who is slated to retire on July 10. Nartatez confirmed his approval, having already signed a resolution prepared by the commission recommending Marantan's extension.

According to Philippines News Agency, Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla has urged the National Police Commission (Napolcom) to approve the extension to ensure the seamless continuation of critical, high-impact operations in the region. Remulla emphasized the significant value of Marantan's service, noting the necessity of his specialized skills for another year.

Napolcom Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Rafael Vicente Calinisan remarked that extending the service of police generals is not unprecedented but is reserved for those who truly merit it. He referenced Section 39 of Republic Act 6975, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Act of 1990, which permits Napolcom to extend the service of officers with ranks of police brigadier general, police major general, or police lieutenant general for a maximum of one year.

Calinisan elaborated that he personally reviewed Marantan's case, concluding that his numerous accomplishments warrant the extension. He noted that only a select few receive such extensions and affirmed Marantan's deserving nature. Calinisan also recounted that his father, Brig. Gen. Roberto Calinisan, was the first police general to receive an extension for meritorious service, granted by then-President Joseph Estrada in January 2000.

Brig. Gen. Marantan expressed his gratitude for the trust and confidence shown by the DILG secretary in recommending the one-year extension of his service within the police force.
