PNP Engages in Extensive Road Clearing and Relief Operations Amid Typhoon Opong Impact

Bicol region: The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Saturday announced that its personnel have been actively participating in road-clearing operations in areas affected by Typhoon Opong, with a particular focus on the Bicol Region.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. issued directives for police commanders to assess the damage, evaluate the condition of police stations and assets, and ensure prompt assistance to the affected regions. Nartatez emphasized the importance of road clearing to facilitate the efficient delivery of relief supplies essential for the communities severely impacted by the typhoon.

The PNP is working closely with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to manage the transportation and security of relief goods. Additionally, police units are tasked with maintaining security at evacuation centers, which continue to shelter thousands of families displaced by the storm.

Reports indicate that over 165,000 families, accounting for more than 580,000 individuals, were evacuated following safety measures implemented by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. The PNP Sub-Committee on Natural Disaster reported the deployment of 7,554 personnel across affected areas, with an additional 11,118 members of the Reactionary Standby Support Force ready to be mobilized.

Police teams have conducted 47 search, rescue, and retrieval operations, successfully saving 6,627 individuals. They have also executed 27 relief missions, benefiting nearly 2,000 individuals in Regions 6 (Western Visayas), 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), and 13 (Caraga). Damage assessments revealed 477 villages were flooded, 52 roads were rendered impassable, and 12 bridges sustained damage.

No casualties among police officers have been reported, although 30 uniformed and five non-uniformed personnel were affected, and three police facilities were damaged. Nartatez assured that despite Typhoon Opong's departure, the PNP's efforts continue on the ground to support community recovery, restore order, and ensure every family receives the necessary aid.
