Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday announced heightened security measures at the United States Embassy in Manila and other key areas in anticipation of possible protests following US military operations in Venezuela. In a statement, PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. emphasized the readiness of police units to maintain order and peace during any mass demonstrations that may arise.
According to Philippines News Agency, the US military launched a significant operation against Venezuela on January 3, targeting narcotics trafficking and criminal networks tied to the Venezuelan government. This operation included airstrikes and ground action, resulting in the reported capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who have been transported to New York to face charges.
The developments have prompted several groups and Filipino lawmakers to urge the national government to condemn the US actions in Venezuela. As a precaution, Nartatez has directed local police units, particularly in Metro Manila, to remain vigilant and coordinate closely with local government and barangay officials to monitor the security landscape.
Lt. Gen. Nartatez stated that police personnel are on standby at critical locations like the US Embassy to ensure these areas remain peaceful. He noted that while no protest actions have been observed yet, the police are preparing for potential demonstrations by increasing their presence in strategic locations.
Additionally, the PNP has tasked its intelligence units with monitoring social media and public forums to detect any emerging protest plans or security threats.
