PNP-HPG Urges Motorists to Follow Undas Safety Protocols Amid Rising Road Incidents

Manila:The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) has issued a reminder to motorists to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles and maintain disciplined driving practices as the Undas observance approaches. This call to action comes in response to a reported increase in road accidents.

According to Philippines News Agency, PNP-HPG director Brig. Gen. Joyce Patrick Sangalang revealed that 118,658 road incidents have been recorded from January to October 15 this year. The primary causes of these incidents include overspeeding, with 37,000 cases, bad overtaking at 20,700, and bad turning with 19,100 incidents. Other notable factors include self-accidents, drunk driving, mobile phone use while driving, and mechanical failures. Motorcycles have been involved in 57,700 of these incidents over the past ten months.

The recorded road mishaps have led to approximately 3,800 fatalities and damage to over 84,000 properties. In preparation for the expected increase in motorists during Undas, 761 HPG personnel and 586 force multipliers will be deployed nationwide. They will focus on decongesting traffic and safeguarding highways, with all administrative personnel on full alert.

To mitigate theft, the HPG advises motorists to park in well-lit, secure areas, lock vehicle doors and windows, and avoid leaving keys inside. The use of anti-theft devices such as steering-wheel locks, motorcycle handlebar locks, alarms, and GPS trackers is also recommended.

Meanwhile, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has directed the strengthening of security measures in cemeteries. This follows a recent incident where police reprimanded tomb caretakers for consuming alcoholic beverages outside Manila North Cemetery at night. The NCRPO stresses the importance of maintaining peace and security to ensure public safety during cemetery visits.

The NCRPO covers five districts, including the Manila Police District and Quezon City Police District. Brig. Gen. Christopher N. Abrahano, the NCRPO chief, instructed district directors to enforce the prohibition on drinking alcohol in cemeteries and emphasized the need to maintain the solemnity of burial grounds. Additionally, more frequent Oplan Galugad operations and increased patrols will be conducted to prevent potential violations and address incidents promptly.
