Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched an in-depth investigation into claims of 'secret meetings' between the families of missing "sabungeros" (cockfighting enthusiasts) and dismissed police officers who are connected to their disappearance.
According to Philippines News Agency, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. stated that investigators are working to determine if additional police personnel were involved in facilitating these meetings. This follows the relief of two officers who were previously the focus of complaints submitted to the National Police Commission (Napolcom).
Gen. Nartatez emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity and professionalism of the organization, stating, "Any action outside of what the PNP should do is not only a betrayal of our mandate but also of the trust and confidence of the people we serve. Let us always allow our moral compass to lead the way."
He acknowledged the right of involved parties to meet but highlighted that police interference in court cases is a grave issue that necessitates scrutiny. Napolcom had earlier revealed the alleged involvement of two police officers in organizing meetings between the victims' families and the dismissed officers implicated in the case.
On Thursday, the PNP named the two officers who were relieved of duty as former Highway Patrol Group spokesperson Lt. Nadame Malang and former Custodial Center warden Maj. Reynaldo Pa±ebe Jr.
Gen. Nartatez called on police personnel to adhere to professionalism and operate within their authority, especially in delicate cases under active investigation. He also urged anyone with information regarding the alleged meetings to assist with the ongoing investigation, which is being conducted alongside Napolcom's probe.
The PNP has assured the public that the investigation will be impartial, and any officers found guilty of improper involvement will face legal repercussions.
