MANILA: The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) anticipates an influx of more than 600,000 travelers at ports nationwide from Friday to Sunday following the holiday break. This surge underscores the significant movement of people returning home after the holidays.
According to Philippines News Agency, PPA General Manager Jay Santiago stated on Thursday that ports are prepared to handle the expected increase in passenger volume, emphasizing the continuation of strict security measures to ensure the safety of maritime travelers. Santiago advised passengers to pre-book their trips to avoid long waits at ticketing booths.
The heightened travel activity is attributed to the relatively low number of travelers during the recent observance of Undas, the Filipino tradition of honoring the deceased. Santiago remarked on the necessity of increasing maritime trips to accommodate the large volume of people.
To manage the surge, PPA ports are on heightened alert, with approximately 3,000 security personnel and force multipliers deployed across the nation. Santiago highlighted the presence of Malasakit Helpdesks, which offer immediate assistance to passengers in need, alongside K-9 patrols and round-the-clock CCTV monitoring.
In a cautionary note to travelers, Santiago advised against bringing prohibited items to ports, such as flammable materials, knives, lighters, and dangerous weapons, to ensure smooth and safe travel for all passengers.
