Roxas city: The Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO-6) has organized a dedicated investigation team to accelerate the resolution of the attempted ambush on a radio broadcaster in Roxas City. This incident occurred early Monday and has prompted swift action from law enforcement.
According to Philippines News Agency, the newly formed team includes the Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division, Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit, Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, and the investigation team from the Capiz Police Provincial Office. PRO-6 Acting Regional Director Randulf Tua±o has directed the Capiz Police Provincial Office and Roxas City Police Station to conduct a thorough and intelligence-driven investigation. The primary goals are to identify and arrest the perpetrators, determine the motive behind the attack, and swiftly resolve the case. Tua±o also mentioned that the regional headquarters is coordinating with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security.
During a media conference, Tua±o stated that it is still unclear whether the incident is related to the broadcaster's professional work. Initial information reveals that broadcaster Jay Lavapiez was en route to his radio station at approximately 5:40 a.m. when two suspects on a motorcycle intercepted and fired at his vehicle in Barangay Cagay. Tua±o urged media professionals facing death threats to report to the Regional Public Information Office for necessary security protection.
Roxas City Mayor Ronnie Dadivas has also condemned the assassination attempt. In a statement, Dadivas emphasized that such acts are not only attacks on individuals but also direct assaults on the fundamental freedoms of speech, expression, and the press. He called upon authorities to ensure the protection of journalists who continue to perform their duties despite the risks.
