Manila: Local shares closed in the negative territory, while the peso depreciated on the first trading day of the week. The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) declined by 0.53 percent to 6,940.01 while All Shares also fell 0.43 percent to 3,867.02. According to Philippines News Agency, Regina Capital Development Corporation Managing Director Luis Limlingan stated that local shares opened the week in the red as investors digested the latest foreign direct investments (FDI) data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). Limlingan cited BSP data indicating that FDIs, including equity capital, reinvested earnings, and borrowings, dropped by 14.5 percent to USD813 million in August, signaling potential caution among foreign investors. Except for Financials, all sectoral indices declined, with Mining and Oil leading the drop at 2.61 percent. Decliners outnumbered gainers at 118 to 70, further reflecting the cautious market sentiment. Meanwhile, the peso experienced depreciation, closing at 58.595 to a doll ar on Monday, down from Friday's 58.26 finish. It opened at 58.45 and traded between 58.45 to 58.64, with the weighted average of the day standing at 58.547. The volume of trade also saw a decline, registering USD1.31 billion from the previous USD1.40 billion.
