Manila: The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) rose Monday amidst investors' concerns, especially after the US attack in Venezuela over the weekend, but the peso weakened against the greenback. The local bourse's main index rose 0.48 percent to 6,164.53 points, and the broader All Shares by 1.04 percent to 3,553.74 points. Most of the sectoral gauges also gained during the day, namely Mining and Oil, 2.95 percent; Services, 1.59 percent; Industrial, 0.71 percent, and Financials, 0.51 percent. However, the Holding Firms fell 0.29 percent and the Property by 0.11 percent. Volume was thin at 948.53 million shares, amounting to PHP5.74 billion. Advancers led decliners at 133 to 93 while 51 shares were unchanged.
According to Philippines News Agency, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation (RCBC) chief economist Michael Ricafor said the PSEi sustained its rise, and even posted "an intraday high of 6,237.14, the highest/best in more than 3.5 months or since September 22, 2025." However, the local currency depreciated to 59.13 against the US dollar from 58.84 on Friday last week. It opened the week's trade sideways at 58.88 and traded between 58.85 and 59.13. The average for the day stood at 58.96. Volume reached USD929 million, higher than the USD699.13 million in the previous session.
