QC Disaster Alert System Wins Global Climate Award in Italy

Venice: Quezon City's real-time calamity monitoring and disaster resilience platform IRISE UP won the Frontline Protection Award at the Planet Aqua City Awards during the Venice Climate Week in Italy. Mayor Joy Belmonte stated that the award places Quezon City among a select group of cities worldwide recognized for initiating programs that protect vulnerable communities from the growing impacts of climate change.

According to Philippines News Agency, the IRISE UP (Intelligent, Resilient, and Integrated Systems for the Urban Population) project is a technology-driven platform that uses artificial intelligence, real-time monitoring systems, and environmental data to help communities prepare for and respond to climate-related hazards. It was developed through the QC Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (QCDRRMO), integrating a vast network of automated weather stations, flood sensors, and the institutionalized reporting system in the communities.

The platform transforms meteorological and environmental data into localized, impact-based alerts across the city's 142 barangays, enabling authorities to implement targeted preparedness measures and preemptive evacuations before disasters occur, the city government said. QCDRRMO head Ma. Bianca Diamante received the award on behalf of the city government.

Belmonte highlighted the significant role local governments play in addressing climate challenges through innovation and community engagement. "As climate risks continue to intensify, local governments must embrace science, technology, and community participation to strengthen resilience. We are proud that Quezon City's data-driven efforts are being recognized on the global stage," she said.

The Planet Aqua City Awards, held in collaboration with C40 Cities on June 3 to 8, recognize cities advancing climate adaptation and water resilience through innovative and scalable initiatives. The Frontline Protection category specifically honors programs that effectively shield communities from climate-related disasters.
