Regulatory Framework Needed to Ensure Nuclear Safety, Says Senator Gatchalian

Manila: Senator Sherwin Gatchalian emphasized the necessity of establishing a regulatory framework for nuclear energy to ensure safety and sustainability, addressing concerns regarding its potential domestic use.

According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian, who serves as the vice chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, is a key proponent of Senate Bill 2899. This bill advocates for the creation of a Philippine Atomic Regulatory Authority. The proposed bill successfully passed the third and final reading on Monday.

The senator stated that the newly proposed agency would maintain regulatory control over all sources of ionizing radiation, including nuclear and radioactive materials and radiation devices. The bill also outlines penalties for unauthorized handling or misuse of nuclear materials and emphasizes public health, safety, and environmental protection, aligning with international standards to bolster public confidence.

Gatchalian expressed that establishing a comprehensive regulatory framework for nuclear technology is crucial to addressing public concerns and enhancing trust in the safe use of nuclear energy. The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute currently functions as the nation's nuclear regulatory authority, focusing on research and development in nuclear sciences and technology.
