Rescue Olympics Enhances Capability of Antique Responders

Manila: The three-day Inter-Barangay Rescue Olympics in this capital town of Antique aimed to enhance the response capability of Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BDRRMC) responders. The event, which kicked off on Tuesday, gathered 28 barangays of San Jose de Buenavista at the Binirayan Sports Complex.

According to Philippines News Agency, Maybato North Barangay Captain Anselmo Joyel expressed satisfaction with the activity, noting its importance in assessing and improving barangay capabilities. The barangay volunteer responders demonstrated techniques such as splinting, bandaging, carrying, and assisting on the first day. The subsequent days are scheduled for activities including throwbag throwing, rescue swimming, underwater knot tying, drowned victim recovery, firefighting, and vehicular road accident rescue.

Meanwhile, as part of the provincial observance of National Disaster Resilience Month, the Antique Integrated Provincial Health Office (IPHO) conducted information sessions on leptospirosis and hands-only cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for barangay health workers (BHWs) at the CityMall in San Jose de Buenavista. IPHO information officer Irene Duldoco highlighted the importance of these sessions, especially following recent inclement weather. As of July 27, Antique has recorded 27 cases of leptospirosis, resulting in two deaths.

Duldoco emphasized the necessity for household members to be knowledgeable about CPR to aid in life-saving efforts. She mentioned that BHWs would be instrumental in training household members on CPR techniques.
