Samal city: The city government here has prepared PHP34 million worth of assistance for approximately 22,500 families as the country continues to grapple with the global oil crisis.
According to Philippines News Agency, Vice Mayor Richard Guindolman stated that PHP16 million will be sourced from the City Social Welfare and Development Office's budget, while PHP18 million will be drawn from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund. Guindolman emphasized the readiness of funds should the oil crisis escalate, noting the approval by the City Council.
A portion of this allocation will be used to purchase rice for distribution to fisherfolk, farmers, and other vulnerable residents. Guindolman also highlighted the city's preparedness in the event of further geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The vice mayor has advised residents to plant vegetables in their backyards to bolster local food security during this energy emergency. Concurrently, Mayor Lemuel Reyes announced the implementation of a four-day on-site workweek from Monday to Thursday, with work-from-home arrangements on Fridays to conserve fuel. Reyes remarked that this measure aligns with national directives aimed at mitigating the impact of rising costs.
Additionally, some barangays have adopted the shortened work-week scheme, and the city government has distributed vegetable seeds to communities as part of its preparedness measures.
