San Roque Dam Increases Water Discharge as Precautionary Measure

Pangasinan: Two gates of the San Roque Dam in Pangasinan were opened by a total of 4.5 meters as of 2 p.m. Friday, to prevent the continued rise of water in anticipation of incoming weather disturbances.

According to Philippines News Agency, National Power Corporation-San Roque Dam flood operation manager Teresa Serra stated in a phone interview that the estimated total discharge from the recent gate opening is around 880 cubic meters per second. Serra explained that this measure is necessary as Binga and Ambuklao are still releasing water even without rainfall in most parts of Pangasinan. The water level of the dam remains on the rise, prompting the need to draw it back to a safer level.

As of noon Friday, the dam's water level stood at 282.87 meters above sea level, surpassing the 280-meter spilling level. Serra noted that they are continuing to monitor the situation to determine if further discharge is required.

Pangasinan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office emergency operations center head Pia Flores mentioned, in a separate phone interview, that they are keeping a close watch on the river systems for any possible effects of the dam discharge. Flores added that local counterparts have been advised on the potential need for pre-emptive evacuation of residents in low-lying areas along the Agno River.
