Legazpi: The Commission on Higher Education in Bicol (CHED-5) is urging academic institutions to actively participate in the search for the Ten Outstanding Students of Bicol (TOSB) program, spearheaded by the Ako Bicol (AKB) Party-list. The initiative aims to identify and honor exceptional students in the region.
According to Philippines News Agency, CHED-5 Director Demetrio Anduyan Jr. emphasized the institution's commitment to nurturing future generations during the program's launch on Friday. "To launch this 11th search, CHED encourages every institution to continue investing in programs that holistically develop our young people-programs that sharpen their intellect, deepen their values, and broaden their horizons," Anduyan stated, as relayed by CHED-5 Education Program Specialist II Cyril Bandiola.
Anduyan further highlighted that institutional involvement not only empowers the youth but also contributes to societal progress and enhances educational quality in Bicol. He noted, "Through our shared initiatives, we magnify our collective capacity to empower youth and strengthen the future of higher education in our region."
AKB Party-list Representative Alfredo Garbin underscored education's pivotal role in combating poverty. "We firmly believe that education is the greatest equalizer. It is the best weapon in the fight against poverty," Garbin expressed in his speech, reiterating AKB's commitment to prioritizing the future of young Bicolanos.
TOSB Chairperson January Dechavez elaborated on the program's objectives, focusing on recognizing students who exhibit leadership excellence. "Our goal is to identify, recognize, and celebrate exemplary students who embody academic excellence, transformational leadership, and a passion for serving their community," Dechavez explained.
Moreover, Dechavez mentioned that the selected students would engage with the community through advocacy projects funded by AKB. "We hope to give students a chance to propose projects that will be funded by AKB, allowing them to implement their advocacy," she stated, emphasizing the program's aim to cultivate capable leaders.
Eligibility for the program is open to Bicolano students aged 18 to 30, enrolled in CHED-approved four or five-year degree programs. Applicants must maintain a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 1.75 or higher, uphold good moral character, and have no disciplinary history. The application period runs from January 1 to January 31, 2026, with the screening process extending from February to March, and the awarding ceremony set for April.
