Manila: The Senate on Tuesday approved the extension of the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2) term, marking it as the first measure to be passed on the third and final reading by the 20th Congress. The extension, sanctioned through Senate Bill No. 1483, will prolong EDCOM 2's mandate by two more years, until 2027, with a unanimous vote of 16-0-0.

According to Philippines News Agency, the bill was primarily authored and sponsored by EDCOM 2 co-chair Senator Loren Legarda. Legarda emphasized that the extension reflects the ongoing momentum of EDCOM 2, indicating that its mandate is far from concluding. She highlighted the necessity of continuous efforts to enhance the educational framework for the Filipino populace.

EDCOM 2 has been instrumental in the passage of 10 education-related laws during the 19th Congress. Additionally, it plays a significant role in advancing six priority measures outlined by the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) in the 20th Congress.

During the Senate Committee on Higher, Technical, and Vocational Education hearing on October 8, 2025, the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority expressed their support for the extension of EDCOM 2's term.

The establishment of EDCOM 2 was initially authorized under Republic Act No. 11899.
