Manila: The Senate on Wednesday paid tribute to eight lawmakers whose terms conclude with the 19th Congress, adopting resolutions commending their public service. Senate President Francis Escudero sponsored all eight resolutions honoring his colleagues, including Senators Nancy Binay, Grace Poe, Cynthia Villar, Ramon Revilla Jr., Aquilino Pimentel III, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada, Majority Leader Francis Tolentino, and himself. The measures recognized the senators' leadership, integrity, and legislative achievements.
According to Philippines News Agency, the resolutions underscored the senators' significant contributions across various policy areas and their roles in strengthening legislative institutions. In her valedictory message read by Sen. JV Ejercito, Binay reflected on her 12-year tenure, marked by early criticism and eventual recognition, emphasizing the Senate's role as the 'memory and conscience' of democracy.
Poe highlighted her legislative record of nearly 700 measures filed and 368 enacted into law, focusing on child nutrition, adoption, internet access reforms, and financial security. She expressed gratitude to her colleagues and committed to continuing her advocacy for animal welfare and underserved communities.
Villar, as chair of the agriculture and environment committees, cited her work on significant agricultural and environmental laws, including the Rice Tariffication Law and over 50 protected area laws. She also emphasized her efforts in waste management legislation.
Revilla, reflecting on three Senate terms, shared his journey from vice governor to senator, highlighting his legislative work on education, social justice, and economic recovery. He reiterated his commitment to public service beyond his Senate role.
The resolutions also recognized Pimentel's dedication to constitutionalism and minority leadership, Tolentino's efforts in defending Philippine sovereignty and legal reform, and Estrada's service as Senate President Pro Tempore.
