Malaca±ang: Concerns over a possible lack of quorum in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte are premature, noting that the Senate continues to function with its active members. This statement follows questions about the potential legal cases faced by some senators related to the alleged flood control scam, which may influence their participation in the impeachment proceedings.
According to Philippines News Agency, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro indicated there is no immediate reason for concern, emphasizing that it is not an issue Malaca±ang should react to at this stage. Castro stressed that public reaction is more pertinent than that of Malaca±ang, expressing confidence that active senators will continue to fulfill their responsibilities.
Castro stated there are currently 22 active senators who attend sessions regularly, and she hopes all senators will be present when necessary. She mentioned that the current situation does not warrant concern, given the number of active senators.
If the impeachment trial proceeds, Castro suggested it would be suitable for Vice President Duterte to testify and defend herself. She asserted that Duterte is best positioned to address the allegations and present her perspective on the issue.
The Senate impeachment court has scheduled a pretrial conference on June 18, where key matters such as stipulation of facts, simplification of issues, and identification of witnesses will be discussed. The conference will also address the marking of evidence, setting of trial dates, and the proposed sequence for the presentation of evidence.
