Manila: Senators on Friday flagged alleged Chinese interference in the May 12 midterm elections as disclosed during a Senate hearing on Thursday and called for thorough investigation to protect the country's sovereignty.
According to Philippines News Agency, Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada stressed the need for accountability amid growing concerns about foreign influence, pointing out that 'although China has denied the accusations, our concerned government agencies must thoroughly investigate and hold accountable those attempting to influence our democratic process, whether they are foreign entities or local collaborators."
Estrada described foreign meddling in the polls as 'a serious affront to our national sovereignty and the integrity of our electoral system.' He urged the public to scrutinize candidates' credentials and backgrounds, referencing past incidents of deception. 'We will not tolerate any foreign interference in our internal affairs. We demand respect for our sovereignty and the right of every Filipino to freely choose their leaders -- free from any intimidation, manipulation or coercion.'
Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros echoed the call for urgent government action, urging the National Security Council (NSC), National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA), and Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to investigate the matter. 'Foreign interference during elections is an election offense. Malaca±ang must also summon the Chinese ambassador,' she said in a separate statement.
Hontiveros also pressed the Senate to prioritize the passage of a proposed Foreign Interference Act, emphasizing the potential for future meddling by China or other states. 'Any Filipino also found to be colluding with foreign powers must be held accountable," she asserted.
Senator Joel Villanueva described the NSC report as 'an affront to our democracy' and called for a comprehensive threat assessment and the implementation of effective countermeasures. 'We must safeguard the integrity of our elections and protect our country at all costs,' he said.
