Severe Tropical Storm Opong Maintains Strength as Wind Signals Persist Across Philippines

Manila: Severe Tropical Storm Opong, locally known as Bualoi, has maintained its intensity, leading to persistent wind signals across numerous regions in the Philippines, the national weather bureau reported on Thursday. Opong continues to exhibit maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometers per hour near its center, accompanied by gusts reaching up to 135 kilometers per hour. The storm's latest position was recorded 335 kilometers east of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) issued an 11 a.m. bulletin indicating that Signal No. 2 remains in effect for several areas, including Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, and parts of Masbate, among others. Residents in these areas are expected to experience gale-force winds as the storm progresses.

Strong winds are also anticipated in regions under Signal No. 1, encompassing parts of Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, and several other provinces. Metro Manila and the surrounding regions, including parts of Visayas and Mindanao, are also under this signal, with PAGASA predicting strong winds in these regions.

The southwest monsoon, influenced by Opong, is expected to bring strong to gale-force gusts across various regions, including the Ilocos Region, Batanes, and parts of Mindanao. Additionally, a gale warning has been issued for the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon and Visayas, heightening concerns over maritime activities.

PAGASA has also highlighted the moderate to high risk of life-threatening storm surges, with potential peak heights of 1 to 3 meters anticipated within the next 36 hours. This warning is particularly relevant for low-lying and exposed coastal areas across Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and several other regions, urging residents to exercise caution and prepare for possible evacuations.
