Manila: Speaker Faustino 'Bojie' Dy III announced on Monday that the House of Representatives is prepared to transform the priorities laid out by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. in his 5th State of the Nation Address (SONA) into actionable legislation. Dy emphasized that the President's address has given Congress a defined legislative path as lawmakers commence work on the administration's priority measures, including plans to alleviate the tax burden on Filipinos and lower electricity costs.
According to Philippines News Agency, Dy stated that the SONA serves as a guide for the administration's direction, and it is Congress's role to provide the necessary support through thorough and timely discussions of the proposed measures. The House is ready to prioritize initiatives that would broaden the income tax exemption to include more workers earning up to PHP350,000 annually, reduce income taxes for other workers, exempt small businesses from the minimum corporate income tax, and offer tax amnesty for unpaid income tax, estate tax, donor's tax, value-added tax (VAT), and related penalties.
Dy affirmed the House's full support for the President's call to deliver meaningful tax relief to the populace. He noted that lawmakers would meticulously examine these proposals to pass measures that enable Filipino workers to retain more of their earnings, assist small businesses in their growth, and provide qualified taxpayers a fresh start through a fair and responsible tax amnesty.
Furthermore, Dy expressed support for the President's call for reforms targeting the reduction of electricity costs. He highlighted that the President has made it a national priority to lower electricity expenses, and the House is prepared to contribute to this effort. Priority will be given to the proposed Sariling Kuryente Act and amendments to the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA) to ensure consumers are not burdened with unjust charges.
Dy remarked that the President's message aligns with the direction he set at the opening of the Second Regular Session of the 20th Congress, urging fellow lawmakers to focus on reforms that directly benefit ordinary Filipinos. He also stressed the importance of close cooperation between the Executive and Legislative branches in advancing the administration's agenda.
