Mindanao: The National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), an attached agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), convened the Mindanao Regional Scientific Meeting (RSM) here on May 19-20 to advance its objectives in the island region. The two-day event brought together about 150 academicians, researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders from across Mindanao to tackle key scientific and technological issues aligned with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to Philippines News Agency, the meeting aimed to identify policy and research priorities that could advance sustainable development nationwide. The Mindanao RSM also served as a preparatory session for the 48th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM), scheduled for July 8-9, with the theme 'UN SDG: Science, Technology, and Innovation for Sustainable Development.'
'Our goal is to assess the progress of science and technology in Mindanao and identify the gaps and challenges,' NAST PHL member Roel Suralta said during a press briefing on Wednesday. He noted that findings from the regional meetings will be compiled into a report for presentation at the ASM.
Discussions in Mindanao centered on soil health and production, processing and post-production, health sector updates, and the role of Universal Health Care and Comprehensive Social Protection. 'The Luzon and Visayas meetings were assigned to other aspects of the SDGs, while these topics were designated for Mindanao,' Suralta explained.
He added that the meeting will produce a resolution reflecting the region's needs, gaps, and challenges. 'Through these resolutions, when consolidated, we can determine measures and steps to further advance science and technology for the benefit of our constituents,' he said. The resolutions, anchored on science-based policy recommendations, are expected to support the achievement of the SDGs and guide priority actions in science, technology, and innovation.
The Mindanao RSM was hosted by the DOST-Caraga Region under Regional Director Noel Ajoc, who lauded the collaboration among participants and stakeholders across Mindanao.
