Stock Market Approaches 6,200 Mark as Peso Strengthens

Manila: The local stock market experienced a notable rise during Tuesday's trading, nearing the 6,200 mark, while the Philippine peso also showed a rebound, settling back into the 56 range.

According to Philippine News Agency, the bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) recorded an increase of 0.66 percent, reaching 6,186.10 points, with All Shares rising by 0.52 percent to 3,646.65 points. Regina Capital Development Corp. head of sales Luis Limlingan noted, "Philippine shares pushed closer to the 6200 level as sentiment continued to improve with the markets calming down before the Easter holiday." He further highlighted that sentiment was bolstered by gains in US stocks, which increased on Monday, driven by tech gains after President Trump temporarily exempted smartphones, computers, and chips from new tariffs.

The performance across sectors was mostly positive, with only the Mining and Oil counter experiencing a slight dip of 0.04 percent to settle at 9,571.98. Noteworthy gainers included the Industrial sector, with shares rising by 1.30 percent; Financials, which saw an increase of 0.77 percent; Holding Firms, up by 0.62 percent; Services, rising by 0.39 percent; and Property, increasing by 0.28 percent. Overall, winners outnumbered losers at 102 to 79, with 66 remaining unchanged.

Meanwhile, the peso concluded the day on a stronger note, returning to the 56 level against the US dollar. It gained 0.31, ending at 56.77 to the US dollar, compared to the previous day's close of 57.08. Despite opening the day weaker at 57.03 from Monday's start at 56.93, the peso traded against the dollar within the range of 56.77 and 57.15. The average level for the day was recorded at 56.98 to the greenback, with trade volume surging to USD2.13 billion from the previous day's USD1.49 billion.
