Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) has issued a reminder for the public to take precautions against common illnesses prevalent during the rainy season.
According to Philippines News Agency, during an interview on Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon over PTV-4, DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo highlighted the importance of being vigilant against WILD-water-borne diseases, influenza-like illness, leptospirosis, and dengue-which are preventable if proper measures are taken.
Domingo pointed out that water-borne diseases like diarrhea can result from contaminated water, especially during periods of frequent rain and flooding. He advised boiling drinking water for at least two minutes as a preventive measure.
Frequent handwashing is recommended as the most effective defense against influenza-like illnesses. Domingo advised individuals exhibiting symptoms such as cough, cold, fever, or body aches to take leave from work or school to avoid spreading the illness to others.
For the prevention of leptospirosis, Domingo suggested that individuals who have come into contact with floodwaters should visit a health center for consultation, even if they do not exhibit any symptoms. He emphasized that bacteria could enter the skin even without an open wound, and symptoms of leptospirosis typically appear about two weeks after exposure, potentially requiring advanced medical treatment.
In the case of dengue, Domingo urged the public to practice "taob, taktak, tuyo at takip" (overturned, shake, dry up, and cover), stressing the importance of maintaining clean households and waterways to prevent mosquito breeding.
