Trkiye Celebrates 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations with the Philippines Through Tree Planting Initiative.

Manila: The Turkish Embassy in Manila commemorated 75 years of diplomatic relations between Trkiye and the Philippines with a symbolic tree planting event, highlighting a robust commitment to their bilateral ties. The ceremony was held at the Makiling Botanic Gardens (MBG) in Los Baños, Laguna province, where 75 myrtle seedlings were planted to mark this significant milestone. According to Philippines News Agency, the event was part of a series of activities organized by the embassy to celebrate this anniversary. Turkish Ambassador to the Philippines, Niyazi Evren Akyol, emphasized the cultural importance of trees and forests in Trkiye, noting that tree planting is a gesture of hope for a prosperous and environmentally sustainable future. Akyol also expressed interest in expanding cooperation with the Philippines in the areas of environment and climate action, given Trkiye's vulnerability to climate change and its active participation in international climate initiatives. Juancho Balatibat, head of the Maki ling Botanic Garden, revealed that Trkiye's aid agency, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), has shown willingness to support development projects in the area. Should the collaboration proceed, Trkiye would become the second foreign government to sponsor an environmental project at MBG, following Thailand. Balatibat highlighted the selection of myrtle seedlings for their resilience and economic significance, symbolizing the enduring and resilient relationship between the two nations. The Myrtaceae-themed garden is intended to serve as a landmark for the celebration of the diplomatic milestone, with hopes for long-term collaboration between Trkiye and the Philippines, particularly in environmental development efforts. The planted myrtles include several notable species, such as the Philippine Ironwood and the Rainbow Eucalyptus. The tree planting initiative was conducted by TIKA in partnership with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)-Makiling Center for Mountain Ecosystems-M BG. The MBG, spanning 300 hectares, is part of the larger 4,200-hectare Makiling Forest Reserve.
