Manila: Filipino military personnel stationed across nine features in the West Philippine Sea are reported to be safe despite the challenging weather conditions exacerbated by the enhanced southwest monsoon, a senior naval official announced.
According to Philippines News Agency, Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, communicated in a media briefing that all personnel, including those on the nine features, are in good condition. "The sea has been rough, and the winds have been above-normal, but overall, the troops, including those aboard the BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal, are safe and secured," Trinidad assured.
Trinidad stated that the soldiers have sufficient supplies to last until the next rotation and resupply mission. "The last RORE for BRP Sierra Madre was on 20 June. The supplies are designed to last beyond the next scheduled RORE. This provision also covers the other eight features," he added, emphasizing the military's preparedness with ample supplies for projected missions.
The Philippine-held features in the West Philippine Sea include Kota, Lawak, Likas, Pag-asa, Panata, Parola, and Patag Islands, along with Rizal Reef and Ayungin Shoal.
When questioned about the impact of inclement weather on the presence of Chinese vessels in the area, Trinidad mentioned that they are awaiting the latest reports due to restricted monitoring capabilities caused by the weather disturbance. He noted, however, that the number of Chinese vessels typically decreases during adverse weather. "We expect for this particular timeframe, the number of PLA Navy ships, Coast Guard, and even the maritime militia to be fewer than the last report," he stated.
