Tropical Storm Basyang Causes Minimal Disruption in Western Visayas

Iloilo: Tropical Storm Basyang has resulted in minimal disruption across the Western Visayas region, with isolated instances of flooding reported. Civil Defense Regional Director and Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) chair Raul Fernandez stated in an interview that flooding occurred in Sigma and Roxas City in Capiz, leading to the displacement of families in Iloilo, Antique, and Aklan.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Disaster Response Operations Management Information and Communication (DROMIC) report from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) highlighted that the weather disturbance affected 15 local government units, encompassing 67 barangays. The report noted that 7,945 families, or 24,638 individuals, were impacted, with 18 families or 43 individuals finding refuge in two evacuation centers.

Fernandez reported that 1,292 travelers were left stranded at Caticlan, Aklan, and Iloilo ports due to the enforcement of the no-sail policy when a typhoon signal is raised. The DSWD's latest report indicated that over PHP1.2 million worth of assistance has been dispensed to the affected families.

As of 11 a.m. on February 7, the DSWD maintained PHP142.27 million in standby resources, which includes PHP3 million in cash and PHP139.27 million in food and non-food items. Fernandez expressed gratitude to the local DRRM councils and government units for their prompt response efforts.

He emphasized the value of the hourly updates from the state weather bureau, particularly from the upgraded Iloilo Doppler Radar Station, which were crucial for local DRRMCs to take appropriate action. Despite the minimal effects of the storm, Fernandez stressed the importance of evaluating plans to permanently relocate families residing in hazard-prone areas, particularly those near rivers and susceptible to landslides.
