Manila: Uwan has intensified into a typhoon and is now within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), posing significant threats to various regions across the country. The eastern portion of Isabela, the eastern and southern areas of Quirino, the southeastern part of Nueva Vizcaya, Aurora, southeastern Rizal, and the eastern areas of Laguna and Quezon, including the Polillo Islands, are among the regions affected. Other areas include Romblon, Marinduque, Camarines Norte and Sur, Albay, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, and Masbate, including Ticao and Burias Islands.
According to Philippines News Agency, the Visayas regions such as Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and parts of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Occidental, Iloilo, and Capiz, as well as Aklan, are also under threat. In Mindanao, the Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte are expected to experience the impact of the typhoon as well.
Uwan is predicted to move west northwestward until Monday before shifting to a north northwestward direction by Tuesday. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has indicated that the center of Uwan may make landfall over southern Isabela or northern Aurora late Sunday evening or early Monday morning.
PAGASA has forecast that Uwan may rapidly intensify, potentially reaching super typhoon status by Saturday evening or Sunday morning. There is a high risk of life-threatening and damaging storm surges, with peak heights exceeding 3.0 meters, expected within the next 48 hours in low-lying coastal communities of Quezon, including the Polillo Islands, Camarines Norte and Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, and Sorsogon.
The typhoon is expected to bring heavy rainfall, with more than 200 millimeters anticipated in Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, and Albay from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. From Sunday afternoon to Monday afternoon, areas including Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, and Pangasinan will also receive over 200 mm of rain.
PAGASA has warned of widespread severe flooding and landslides in these regions. Other areas, including Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, Samar, Eastern Samar, as well as Metro Manila and several provinces in Central Luzon and CALABARZON, will experience 100 to 200 mm of rain throughout Uwan's passage.
Numerous flooding events are likely, especially in urbanized, low-lying, or river-adjacent areas. PAGASA has noted that forecast rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated regions, with impacts potentially exacerbated by prior significant rainfall.
