Manila: The University of the Philippines (UP) and De La Salle University (DLSU) have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance research and academic programs. This collaboration aims to promote advancements in social entrepreneurship and service-learning innovations over the next five years.
According to Philippines News Agency, the agreement outlines plans for the two institutions to work together on research projects, resource mobilization, and the sharing of academic information and materials. The partnership is seen as a strategic move to foster a culture of sustainability within the country, impacting both academic and national communities.
Social entrepreneurship is highlighted by UP as a unique approach that addresses economic, social, and environmental development, ultimately benefiting community wellbeing. Unlike traditional business models, this approach integrates diverse aspects of development to create impactful changes.
In addition to this, service learning is emphasized as a key component of the partnership. It combines academic learning with community service, allowing students to apply their knowledge to real-world issues. This method not only highlights the social relevance of various disciplines but also encourages students to engage actively with their communities, improve interpersonal skills, and experience personal growth.
UP vice president for academic affairs, Leo Cubillan, remarked on the significance of service learning, stating, "It offers an opportunity for our students to see the social relevance of their disciplines, actively engage with their communities, enhance their interpersonal skills, and provide space for personal growth. It is a pedagogy that connects theory with practice."
