Venezuela Quake Death Toll Climbs to 1,450

Manila: The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela climbed to 1,450 on Sunday, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez said. In a televised address, Rodriguez detailed the aftermath, stating that more than 3,150 people have been injured, with 12,721 individuals displaced or otherwise affected by the disaster. Additionally, 774 buildings have been reported as collapsed.

According to Philippines News Agency, efforts to rescue and provide relief to those affected are ongoing. Rodriguez emphasized that over 25,000 personnel, including rescuers, military, police, civil protection teams, the Red Cross, and other organizations, are involved in operations to save lives. The international community has also extended its support, with 2,624 international rescue workers participating in the relief efforts, bolstered by 137 dogs and 49 support vehicles.

On Saturday, Rodriguez reported that 1,430 people had died and 3,238 others were injured, indicating a rising toll as search-and-rescue efforts continue. The earthquakes, which occurred on Wednesday, were reported by the US Geological Survey to have magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck 23 kilometers southeast of Yumare in Yaracuy state, while the magnitude 7.2 quake occurred 23.9 kilometers northeast of San Felipe in the same state.
