Village Official Donates One-Month Salary to Assist Tricycle Drivers Amid Fuel Crisis

Calbueg: A village official has taken a commendable step in supporting tricycle drivers during a challenging time of high fuel prices by donating his one-month salary.

According to Philippines News Agency, Barangay Calbueg Kagawad James Bataan was inspired to act after being tagged in a social media post by a fellow councilor who had also decided to allocate his salary to assist constituents. The 35-year-old first-term official felt challenged by the gesture and decided to contribute in a similar manner.

Bataan used his salary to purchase five kilos of rice and provided a PHP100 cash fuel subsidy to each of the 27 tricycle drivers in his village. He also distributed additional cash to support their daily needs. Bataan acknowledged the difficulties faced by tricycle drivers due to the fuel crisis, especially with fewer passengers available now that schools are not in session.

Emphasizing the responsibilities of elected officials, Bataan stated, "We are experiencing a crisis, making their work and source of livelihood even more difficult. This is our chance now that we are going through a crisis." His actions reflect a commitment to serving and supporting his community during these trying times.
