Visayas Grid Faces Earlier Yellow Alert Due to Additional Power Plant Outages

Manila: The yellow alert for the Visayas grid was moved an hour earlier on Monday, now running from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., due to the forced outage of additional power plants.

According to Philippines News Agency, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines reported that the available capacity stands at 2,552 megawatts (MW) while the peak demand is 2,329 MW. This adjustment follows the forced outages of units G and H at the Panay Diesel Power Plant 3, along with units 2 and 3 of the Bohol Diesel Power Plant.

The yellow alert, signifying an inadequate operating margin to meet the contingency requirement, was initially triggered by the forced outage of units 1 and 2 of the Therma Visayas Grid and unit 3 of the Panay Energy Development Corporation. Over 20 other power plants are currently unavailable, contributing to the alert.

The NGCP detailed that a total of 13 power plants have been on forced outage this June. Additionally, eight have been inactive since May, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, and two since 2023, with none reported inactive since 2021. Furthermore, 16 other power plants are operating at reduced capacities, resulting in approximately 963.4 MW of unavailable capacity for the grid.
