Visayas Grid Faces Yellow Alert Amid Limited Capacity

Visayas: A yellow alert has been issued for the Visayas grid from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday due to limited capacity amid higher demand.

According to Philippines News Agency, a 1 p.m. advisory from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) indicated that the available capacity in the Visayas is at 2,613 megawatts (MW), which is below the contingency requirement as peak demand is expected to reach 2,504 MW.

NGCP reported that Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc. remain unavailable. Furthermore, seven power plants have experienced forced outages this month, while 20 others have not been operational since as far back as 2021.

The NGCP also noted that 14 additional plants are operating at derated capacities, which has resulted in a total loss of 810.1 MW for the grid.
