Women’s Priority Legislative Agenda Pushed; Champs in Congress Sought

Manila: The Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) on Wednesday formally endorsed its Women's Priority Legislative Agenda (WPLA) for the 20th and 21st Congress, urging members of the House of Representatives to champion measures that promote and protect the rights and welfare of Filipino women. PCW Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla and other officials called on legislators to support, sponsor, and refile key gender-responsive bills, emphasizing the need to place women's experiences at the center of policymaking.

According to Philippines News Agency, the WPLA outlines priority measures aimed at addressing persistent gender gaps, strengthening safeguards against discrimination and violence, and expanding opportunities for women in all sectors. These reforms are essential to ensure that national laws remain responsive to the evolving realities faced by women across the country.

The event forms part of a broader push to engage policymakers, civil society, and stakeholders in advancing gender equality. On Tuesday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to protect women's rights and end all forms of violence against women as the country observes the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women. Marcos stressed that safeguarding women's welfare is a 'perpetual mission' and essential for the nation's growth. He said ensuring women's peace and happiness allows them to reach their full potential, which is vital for a flourishing society.

He also acknowledged the PCW for its ongoing efforts to uphold women's empowerment and implement laws promoting equality and justice. He said the PCW's work encourages systems to be more humane and accountable, assuring every Filipina that the government stands with her. The 18-day campaign runs annually from Nov. 25 to Dec. 12.
